Workplace WellnessWellness programs are proven to reduce costs and take care of a company’s most valuable asset — its employees! The Michigan Institute for Health Enhancement’s (MIHE) wellness team is comprised of healthcare professionals from several disciplines who have developed a portable, on-site preventative health-assessment program. This innovative program offers individuals tangible recommendations to help avoid preventable diseases and is designed to parallel the U. S. Surgeon General’s Healthy People 2010 Initiative. The program, which can be conducted at an employer’s site or one of three MIHE locations, draws on scientific research to educate people about preventative measures that will improve their health and lifestyle.

Why should your company spend resources on wellness?
The Michigan Institute for Health Enhancement’s wellness philosophy is focused on achieving a return on investment for each dollar spent on employee health. Studies have proven that healthy and fit employees are absent less often from work and are more productive. When companies see a rise in their productivity, they usually also see an improvement in their bottom line as well.

Description:  The Michigan Institute for Health Enhancement obesity/overweight program is designed to provide individuals with the knowledge and tools necessary to make critical lifestyle changes.  The program was designed and is facilitated by knowledgeable health professionals –exercise physiologists, health psychologists, registered nurses, registered nutritionists, fitness consultants and wellness counselors.

Our workplace wellness program is unique in many ways:

  • Education Focused – We believe knowledge is power.  We provide education on scientifically supported principles of proper nutrition and fitness.  We help to deflate the many myths of nutrition, weight loss and exercise.
  • A Sensible Approach – We do not encourage pills, powders, miracle cures, or invasive surgical procedures.  Our effectiveness comes from helping individuals set realistic goals, identify obstacles and plan for real solutions to achieve success.
  • Action Oriented – Each session begins and ends with goal setting activities.  We firmly believe that the road to success is paved with small steps.
  • Communication and Technology Oriented – At any given moment, a MIHE wellness participant may receive a personalized phone call from an wellness counselor or a nutritionist.   With a single click of the mouse, the MIHE participant has full access to an interactive website allowing for individualized, real-time monitoring of progress.  Should the MIHE participant wish their progress reported to their primary care physician, this too can be arranged.  Healthy weight programs are available on the web and in print to reach dispersed employee populations.
  • Not Weight Centered – Although weight loss is a common side effect of our program, it is not our main focus.  We provide other indicators of health including body fat analysis, waist circumference, and dietary analysis.
  • Effectiveness Building – With the tools to improve eating habits and safely increase physical activity, participants can expect better effectiveness at work and at home.  Past participants report increased energy, reduced weight and an improved outlook on their long-term health.
  • Critical Relationships – In its ongoing endeavor to communicate success and struggle, short-term gains and long-term sustainable changes, MIHE has developed close ties with various health care providers, health care managers, and professional medical societies to develop progressive methods of monitoring all aspects of care provided to participants of the MIHE program.
